Great whites can be identifed by the patterns and notches on their dorsal fins and whale sharks by the spot markings they have on their sides, just behind their gills. A few years ago, I met shark expert, Eli Martinez. He set up Shark Diver Magazine. Through the magazine he ran expeditions to dive with the large predatory species of sharks in the best places in the world to see them. Due to the success of the expeditions, the magazine faded out but Eli still continues to educate people on sharks through his expeditions, school, community talks and the television programmes that feature him and his work. Under Eli’s guidance and education, these trips were designed to give you the chance to dive with these sharks face-to-face and without the use of cages. Unfortunately, due to government rules, he is now not allowed to run trips to dive with Great Whites without the use of cages but hopes to in the future if the rules change.
Eli also runs trips to dive with other great ocean dwellers, such as whales, mantas, whale sharks and belugas. He was one of the frst people to set up diving expeditions, which allowed you in the water with crocodiles without the use of cages. If you thought shark diving was crazy, then you must try the crocodiles! More about this in the next issue. I have been a regular on his trips over the last four years and have learned a lot about many species of marine animals, whilst enhancing my skills as an underwater photographer. My images have won a few competitions on ‘Viewbug’ and I have had some of my work featured in calendars, articles and websites of different marine science charities and organisations and will be supplying images and writing blogs about the importance of our UK marine life to help promote the good work that they do.
Unfortunately, in the world of underwater photography, equipment is a bit expensive, as you have to buy the camera and then the housing to be able to take it under water. Saying this, there are options to suit all budgets and what with the rapid advancement in technology, it is now possible for you to get your own great underwater shots. For example, you can buy an entry level camera such as a GoPro for just over £100.
Practically every camera on the market, from compacts to mirrorless to SLRs, have a variety of underwater housings that you could buy to fit them. Perhaps you already have a camera that you want to take underwater? Why not look for a housing that will fit it or see if you can find a good quality used camera and housing. You could buy a set up second-hand for a fraction of the cost of buying it new, although care should be taken to make sure that it is in full working order and has been well looked after. There are some good deals to be had out there, as people often upgrade and the housings mostly aren’t interchangeable, so people often sell their whole set-up. A great place to look for used equipment is in Underwater Photography Magazine in the small ads section: www.uwpmag. com/?p=sell
If you are serious and want professional quality pictures, then it is easy to spend up to £10,000 on cameras, housings, domes, ports and strobes, so it may be good to gain experience on something less expensive to begin with. It would also be very benefcial to do your research frst. There are many reviews of underwater set ups and articles about camera settings that can be found on Google or YouTube.

Pediatric Aquatic Homicide Investigation
This is the prerequisite for the other two presentations which will not make sense if you don't first attend this It is likely that more aquatic pediatric homicides are being missed than caught. Drowning is a diagnosis of exclusion; there are no recognized medical tests for drowning. A toddler can be suffocated with a pillow and placed in a bathtub to stage an accidental drowning. A drowned infant can be dried off and placed in a crib to mimic SUIDI. Hence, a thorough investigation is absolutely critical for determining the actual cause and manner of death. Obstacles include: few responders/investigators are trained in aquatic homicide investigations, officers are often responding in rescue mode to ‘grieving loved ones" performing CPR, assumptions of drowning COD and accident MOD are made by all, clearly dead infants/children are transported to hospitals, etc with the result that critical evidence is often lost, necessary questions aren't asked, and incorrect assumptions can be perpetuated. Training can change this so let's start now.

Sea' Clearly with this EcoConscious Mask & Goggle Defog, made with only the safest ingredients for you and our planet.
Reef-friendly, Non-toxic Professional Strength Biodegradable reef safe formula Our eco-safe Mask Defog is based on the ingredients of our shampoo, which has been tested to be biodegradable and safe for fish - AND it works brilliantly!
Testimonials have been rolling in that it holds up to multiple dives, and our bottles are sustainably
made from sugarcane resins and recycled plastics. Our mask defog is just another way to protect
what we love and see clearly while doing so!
Confession: My spit is defective. It doesn’t matter how much I prepare my mask, either. I have scrubbed and scrubbed, “toothpasted”, flamed, and scrubbed some more. I always fog.
So, I jumped into the lab and whipped up a batch using our tested and proven eco-safe ingredients. I like my defog a little more thick and believe the guar gum can also leave a slight film on the lens to help reduce fogging. It worked great for me, so I started giving out samples to friends and Divemaster's – they all loved it!
